How to Use Password Rooms: Anonymous Chat + Online Whiteboard
A simple guide to entering password rooms in Anonymous Chat and Online Whiteboard, inviting friends, using them on mobile, and understanding each 24-hour cleanup rule.
# How to Use Password Rooms: Anonymous Chat + Online Whiteboard
Want a separate place to chat with friends, or a whiteboard only your group knows about? Use a password room.
One important note first: this guide puts Anonymous Chat and Online Whiteboard in one article only for convenience. They are still two completely separate tools. Using the same password in both does not connect the chat room to the whiteboard.
## Three things to remember
1. Inside the same tool, people who enter the exact same password reach the same password room.
2. The password is not added to a share link or saved for you in the browser. Send the entry link and password separately.
3. Use a new, long password that is hard to guess. Do not reuse an email, banking, or other important account password.
## Anonymous Chat: entering a password room
On desktop, open Anonymous Chat and select “Password room” in the upper-right area. The password form appears below the room controls.
Then:
1. Enter a password with at least 6 characters.
2. Select “Enter.”
3. When the interface turns dark and the header says “Password room,” you are in.
4. Ask your friend to open Anonymous Chat and enter the same password.
The mobile flow is the same, with a tighter layout. Once inside, the dark room and the “Public room” button make the current state clear.
Each message can contain up to 300 characters, and one message can be sent every 3 seconds. Refreshing returns you to the public room, so you need to enter the password again.
Chat messages are encrypted in the browser before they are sent, but this is not a magic vault that makes a weak password safe. A guessable password can still be attacked, and the current site code must be trusted. Avoid putting highly sensitive information here.
## Online Whiteboard: entering a password room
From Home, open Tools and then Online Whiteboard. On desktop, the lobby has a clear Password room card.
Next:
1. Enter 4–128 characters in the room-password field.
2. Select “Enter password room.”
3. Wait until the header shows “Password room” and “Connected” before drawing.
4. Anyone who opens the same whiteboard entry and uses the same password joins that isolated board.
The mobile controls work the same way. Draw with one finger, and use two fingers to zoom and pan. Export and Leave board remain in the top bar.
To invite someone, open Export and copy or share the whiteboard entry, then tell them the password separately. The link does not contain the password. For anything important, export a PNG or SVG and wait for saving to finish before leaving.
A whiteboard password room isolates access by password, but the canvas still synchronizes with the server. It is not password-based end-to-end encryption.
## The easy way to remember the 24-hour rules
- Chat follows the last new message. After 24 hours without a new message, that password room history is cleaned up. Entering or reading alone does not extend it.
- Whiteboard follows the last person leaving. Its 24-hour timer starts after the final real connection leaves. Re-entry cancels the timer; the next empty period starts it again. Expiry removes the whole board and its images.
In one line: Chat watches the last message; Whiteboard watches the last person leaving.
## If something does not work
- Are both people using the same tool? Chat and Whiteboard passwords do not cross over.
- Does the password match exactly, including case, numbers, and symbols?
- Did the page refresh? Both tools require the password again after a refresh.
- Does Whiteboard still say “Connecting”? Wait for “Connected” before drawing.
